Abu Simbel Day Trip from Aswan Itinerary
3:45–4:15 AM – Hotel or Nile Cruise Pickup in Aswan
Your Abu Simbel day trip from Aswan begins early in the morning with pickup from your hotel or Nile cruise.
Meet your driver and tour representative before boarding a comfortable air-conditioned vehicle for the journey south.
The early start means cooler temperatures at the archaeological site and leaves you with the rest of the afternoon available when you return to Aswan.
If you are staying on a Nile cruise, we recommend requesting a breakfast box from reception the evening before departure.
4:15 AM – Depart Aswan for Abu Simbel
Leave Aswan and begin the scenic desert drive toward Abu Simbel.
The temples lie around 290 km south of Aswan, close to Egypt's southern border, and the road journey normally takes approximately three to four hours depending on traffic, checkpoints and your pickup location.
Sit back and relax as the landscape changes from the Nile Valley to the vast desert of southern Egypt.
A short comfort stop can be arranged along the way when required.
Around 7:30–8:00 AM – Arrive at Abu Simbel
Arrive at the spectacular Abu Simbel temple complex beside Lake Nasser.
Before entering, your Egyptologist guide will introduce you to the story of the site, including Ramesses II, Queen Nefertari and the remarkable UNESCO-led project that saved the temples from the rising waters created by the Aswan High Dam.
The temples were relocated to higher ground during the 1960s in one of the world's most ambitious archaeological rescue operations.
8:00 AM – Explore the Great Temple of Ramesses II
Begin your visit at the highlight of Abu Simbel: the Great Temple of Ramesses II.
Approaching the façade is one of the most memorable moments of the tour. Four colossal seated statues of Ramesses II dominate the entrance, creating one of ancient Egypt's most recognizable views.
Step inside the rock-cut temple to see:
- The monumental statues of Ramesses II
- The impressive hypostyle hall
- Detailed reliefs showing the king and his military campaigns
- Religious scenes dedicated to the gods
- The inner sanctuary deep inside the mountain
The temple was designed so precisely that sunlight reaches deep into the sanctuary on two special days each year, 22 February and 22 October.
Allow around 60–75 minutes to appreciate the Great Temple and its interior without rushing.
9:15 AM – Visit the Temple of Queen Nefertari
Continue to the neighboring Temple of Hathor and Queen Nefertari, often called the Small Temple.
Built by Ramesses II in honor of his Great Royal Wife Nefertari and the goddess Hathor, the temple is particularly unusual because the colossal figures of Nefertari on its façade are represented at almost the same scale as those of Ramesses II—an exceptional honor in ancient Egyptian royal art.
Explore the beautifully decorated chambers and reliefs while learning about Nefertari's importance to Ramesses II.
Allow around 40–45 minutes for the visit.
10:00 AM – Free Time for Photos and Lake Nasser Views
After exploring both temples, enjoy some free time around the archaeological site.
Walk between the temples, photograph the enormous façades from different angles and enjoy views of Lake Nasser.
This extra free time is important because it keeps the experience relaxed rather than rushing travelers immediately back to the vehicle.
Your guide can also point out some of the best viewpoints for photographing the two temples.
10:30–10:45 AM – Depart Abu Simbel
Meet your driver and begin the journey back north toward Aswan.
Relax in the air-conditioned vehicle after your morning of sightseeing.
Around 2:00 PM – Return to Aswan
Arrive back in Aswan and enjoy drop-off at your hotel or Nile cruise.
The afternoon remains free, making it possible to relax onboard your cruise or continue exploring Aswan independently.
Actual return time may vary slightly depending on your hotel location, road conditions and the length of your visit.
